Human Services is one of the most rewarding careers out there. It allows you to spend your days truly making a difference in the lives of others, which, in turn, infuses your own life with meaning and purpose. It’s also a career with plenty of room for advancement, great benefits, job security, flexibility, and a whole host of other plusses.

But a career in human services, whether you’re a direct support professional for people with developmental disabilities or a home health aide, homemaker or companion to elderly people in their homes, isn’t just a job. It’s a calling. Do you have the skills for it? Here are some of the most important skills it takes to thrive and succeed in senior care.

Compassion and empathy

This quality tops the list. To be a truly successful adult care professional, you need to be a compassionate individual who truly cares about others. Remember, you are working with people who need help to live independent lives. They may be dealing with recovering from a surgery or hospital stay, dementia or other memory or mental issues, or simply old age that doesn’t allow them to do everything they used to do. They may feel distress or confusion or even anger. It’s vital that their caregivers have the ability to put themselves in their shoes. Doing the job with a “How would I like to be treated?” mindset is what makes an outstanding caregiver.

Time management and punctuality

As a home health aide or direct support professional, you must be able to get to work on time, and use your time wisely and efficiently while you’re there. In the field of adult care, time management is perhaps more important than in other fields. If you punch in late for another type of job, you’re only hurting yourself and inconveniencing your co-workers. Being late in this field could actually be harmful to the people in your care. That’s why reliable transportation is a must.

Perception and observation

Home health workers are oftentimes the first line of defense for the people under their care. You must be able to notice little changes, pay attention to detail, and have an eye for seeing when something just seems “off.” You’ll need keen observation skills to see when something is wrong, even if the people in your care are actively trying to hide it. It could be the first signs of something more seriously wrong. Also, it’s important to notice changes in the person’s household or environment.

The ability to work independently

As a home health aide, you’re working independently in people’s homes. Duties or necessary tasks might change on the fly, depending on the situation or the day. It’s necessary to be able to roll with any changes that come down the pike and make decisions on an as-needed basis.

Interpersonal and social skills

You must be a people person to succeed in this field. It’s necessary to develop relationships with those under your care, be able to chat easily with them, and in general, be a positive influence in their lives. Many elderly people can feel isolated, and your visits just might be the highlight of their day.

Good physical health and stamina

This isn’t exactly a “skill,” but caregiving is not for sedentary people. You’re on your feet much of the day, depending on the type of job you’re doing. You may be vacuuming or doing other light housework, grocery shopping, pushing them in a wheelchair around the park on nice days, or even lifting or transferring them. Comfortable shoes are a must!

The ability to recharge

Caregiving can be an emotionally taxing field, especially if you develop close relationships with the people under your care. When you leave work after your shift, it’s vital that you take care of you. Do whatever it is that recharges your batteries, whether it’s a walk in nature, a movie or just spending some “you time” in a long bath with a good book. You’ll need the ability to “turn it off” so you can come back to work the next day fresh and ready to go.

Caregiving isn’t for everyone, but if you have the skills to do the job, it is one of the most rewarding fields you can choose. If you’d like to learn more, get in touch with us at Pinnacle Services.

During the pandemic, millions of people experienced temporary or permanent layoffs, furloughs or other events that caused them to leave their workplaces and jobs. Industries like hospitality closed entirely while others saw demand for goods and services dry up as the country hunkered down. Three million women alone left the job market during the pandemic, many citing the impossibility of juggling their jobs with childcare and shepherding older children through online learning. As the country opens back up and things settle into a “new normal,” many of those people are reconsidering whether they want to go back to their old jobs at all.

A recent report by Pew Research revealed that two-thirds of Americans who were laid off or lost their jobs outright during the pandemic have seriously considered changing their occupation, not simply getting a new job in their old fields, when the economy gets rolling again.

What’s behind this great American reckoning? One word: Meaning.

It’s about finding meaning

More than 600,000 Americans died because of COVID-19. Most everyone knows a family who has experienced this loss. As a nation, and as a global community, we have all lived through a time when simply going to the grocery store meant risking your life. That can cause a seismic shift in a person. Priorities change. People get real about what’s important and what’s not. Americans have been “deeply changed” by the pandemic, says a recent report by PBS, and it’s caused them to rethink their life choices, including their careers. Many of those people are looking inward and grappling with the notion that they want more meaning in their lives and careers. They want to make a difference, feel fulfilled and be at peace with their day-to-day lives. They want work/life balance for real, having the time to attend those student-teacher conferences, Little League games and school plays. Or simply having the flexibility to devote to interests and passions outside of work.

A career in home health care checks all of those boxes.

4 reasons to consider a career in home health care

Meaning and fulfillment. You will truly be making a difference in people’s lives. Whether you’re a respite worker who gives caregivers some precious “time off” to recharge their batteries, a home health aide who helps elderly folks stay in their homes, a direct support professional who works with people with developmental disabilities or any of the number of positions involved in home health care, you will be helping people every single day. It doesn’t get much more meaningful than that.

Flexibility. One of the outgrowths of the pandemic was the nearly universal desire for more flexible schedules to help fuel a better work/life balance. Careers in home health care afford that kind of flexibility. You can work part time, full time, days, weekends, evenings or a mix of all of the above. It’s possible to design a schedule that fits your life, not making your life fit your schedule.

Less stress. If you’re a nurse who has worked in a hospital during this pandemic, you know all about stress. Burnout rates for medical professionals are through the roof because of the intense pressure of working during a pandemic. Many nurses have left those high-stress jobs, but don’t wish to completely abandon the careers they’ve worked so hard to build. At Pinnacle Home Care, our nurses visit one-on-one with people in their homes, establishing rewarding relationships with the folks in their care. It’s an antidote to the stress of hospital work, and allows you to still do what you do best.

High demand for jobs. Home health care is a growing industry that shows no signs of slowing down. By 2030, there will be 72.1 million people 65 and older in the U.S., roughly 19% of people in this country. For people who were laid off during the pandemic, the job security of working in a high-demand field is a great benefit.

If you’re looking for more meaning in your life, a career in home health care is a powerful way to find it. Contact us today to find out more.

People with disabilities often have the same goals, desires and need for acceptance as everyone else. However, some of life’s daily tasks can pose challenges for them that neurotypicals might not endure. Unfortunately, this can be harmful to well-being and self-esteem.

For those who work with vulnerable populations, like those with disabilities, it’s important to validate them and take their hardships seriously. However, struggling shouldn’t have to lead to suffering. You can do your part to help people with disabilities overcome these struggles through positive actions and affirmations.

These affirmations refer to the way people think and perceive themselves. And by providing people with encouragement, assistance and an open ear, you can help them overcome adversity and accomplish what they initially thought was impossible.

What things can people with disabilities struggle with?

There are some skills and abilities neurotypicals take for granted. While people with disabilities can accomplish those same tasks, it can require more focus, along with mental and physical effort. Some of those tasks can include:

Executive functioning: Paying attention, organizing and planning.

Emotional regulation: Exerting control over thoughts, feelings and actions.

Certain motor skills: Cooking, cleaning, opening doors, walking down a hallway, etc.

When people with disabilities see neurotypicals who can carry out these functions with ease, it can lower their confidence and make them feel like their differences are something to be ashamed of. Dehumanizing or punishing people with disabilities won’t help them recognize their potential or help them overcome their challenges.

But, through positive actions and affirmations, you can help give them the confidence they deserve to overcome adversity and live their best lives.

How can I make the most of positive actions and affirmation?

Affirmations can be helpful, but it’s important to act and deliver them in a way that’s not patronizing. Here’s what is and isn’t helpful:

What’s helpful

Asking if they need help: If you see a person with a disability struggling, asking if they need assistance isn’t debilitating or patronizing. If they accept your help, it’s important to ask how they would like your help. If they can’t answer the question directly, try asking more specific questions about what they’re struggling with and if doing something specific could assist them.

Validating their frustrations: To you, the task that the person with a disability is struggling with may be something that comes naturally. However, that same task could require more physical or mental effort on their part. In these situations, it’s important to acknowledge their adversity and that they shouldn’t feel ashamed for struggling with it.

Using positive reinforcement: People, whether they have disabilities or not, tend to respond better to positive messages than negative ones. When working with someone who has a disability, always encourage them to repeat the behavior that helped them succeed. That reinforcement could be as simple as a smile, a pat on the back or a compliment for a job well done.

What’s not helpful

Helping them without asking first: Even though we’re taught to jump in when we see someone struggling, it can feel condescending to a person with a disability if they didn’t ask for help. And in some cases, trying to help them might even make things worse.

Talking down to them: People with disabilities want and deserve equal treatment. Talking down to them when they’re struggling can hurt their self-esteem and exacerbate the anguish they’re already feeling, making it more difficult to complete certain tasks.

Feeling sorry for them: Your sympathy may come from a good place, but it’s not always helpful for a person with a disability who is struggling with a task. Many people don’t want sympathy, they want the same opportunity as others to live a life of dignity.

Everyone faces different obstacles

We all have hardships in our lives. And no matter who people are and what hardships they face, they deserve to be treated with validation, dignity and respect.

When you engage people with disabilities with positive actions and affirmations, you’re not only giving them the courage and empathy they need, you’re empowering them to live their life to the fullest and affirming that no matter what they struggle with, they can face and accomplish those tasks head on.

Pinnacle Services understands the needs and challenges of those with disabilities and is looking for direct support professionals like you who can be a role model and guide to those we serve.

We all have days when things don’t go our way, which can make us feel frustrated, upset and even angry. Adults with disabilities have days like this too. However, some struggle to regulate or recognize their negative emotions, causing these emotions to manifest in quirky and sometimes inappropriate behaviors.

In many cases, adults with severe disabilities may have trouble regulating these behaviors on their own. Fortunately, there are many ways you as a direct support professional can be there for them and help mitigate their stress.

What can make them upset?

No person with a disability is exactly the same, so the things that set them off can vary from person to person. Here are a few examples of things that could upset them:

Feelings of uncertainty

Sleeping troubles

An argument with a friend or family member

Unpleasant stimuli (sounds, noises or textures they find upsetting)

During these times, it’s important to remember that vulnerable adults are people too. When they’re not feeling great, they deserve to be treated with respect, compassion and empathy. Here are a few ways you can help a vulnerable adult when they’re in a bad mood:

Listen to what they have to say

When we’re upset, we want to feel heard and have our experiences validated. Most vulnerable adults want the same thing. Ask them what’s wrong and if they decide to talk about it, give them your full attention and an open ear. If they don’t, ask them if there is anything else you can do to make them feel better. However, if the person you’re working with is nonverbal, you can try to engage them in a soothing and enjoyable activity.

Give them space if they need it

If they’re not at risk of harming themselves or others, vulnerable adults just need some time to themselves. That can mean processing their emotions independently. In other cases, it means taking a break from working or group activities until they can collect themselves.

If they show harmful and aggressive behaviors, safely intervening is crucial. Provide them with a safe environment and reward positive behaviors while attempting to minimize negative ones. If aggressive behaviors persist, reach out to specialized care professionals for help.

Find out what’s making them upset

Some people have very specific things that can upset them, like not having the same food on a particular day, a specific noise that makes them uncomfortable or an event that throws them off of their routine. Some triggers are easier to avoid than others but knowing what sets a person off can help mitigate their discomfort. If the triggers aren’t easy to avoid, you can work with the vulnerable adult to come up with different coping mechanisms that help them remain calm.

You can make a difference in their day

Vulnerable adults have bad days just like everyone else. And no matter the root cause, you can make them feel a little better by being there for them and helping them with life’s ups and downs.

Kindness, compassion and empathy are all skills people need to make it through life. And while it can seem like soft skills hold little value in the modern workplace, they are equally as crucial as hard technical skills. Soft skills are especially important in organizations that work with vulnerable populations.

At Pinnacle Services, soft skills like kindness, flexibility and a positive attitude are at the core of our business and are qualities we look for in new team members.

If you’re looking for hands-on work with vulnerable adult populations, Pinnacle is the place to be. If you have what it takes, we’d love for you to join the team.

Pinnacle strives to provide quality care for all

No matter where someone is from, what they’ve experienced or who they are, Pinnacle believes in the importance of treating others as equals and providing them with an exceptional quality of life. To continue that mission, we’re looking for people who share those values to come join us as we continue creating and expanding opportunities for vulnerable adults.

If these traits align with your character and skill set, you could be a great fit for the Pinnacle team:

You encourage others to reach their full potential

Supporting others to do their best benefits everyone. Whether it’s encouraging a vulnerable adult or one of your team members, our business is all about the human connection and adding value to people’s lives. When you actively listen to others, empathize with them and are able to provide valuable solutions, it helps both them and Pinnacle Services as a whole achieve their goals.

You show honesty and integrity

Being a good team member means being honest, responsible and accountable, especially when you’re working with vulnerable adult populations. Working with the people we serve requires working with sensitive information and behaviors.

You can quickly and easily adapt to change

When working with vulnerable adults, certain situations can escalate quickly, sometimes out of nowhere. When this happens, it’s important to act swiftly and calmly. Anything from a bad night of sleep to a simple accident can leave some vulnerable adults in a bad mood. If you’re able to remain empathetic, calm and compassionate, you can better adapt to the behavioral and environmental changes around you.

You bring joy to people’s lives

Do you light up the room with your personality or go the extra mile to make someone’s day? The people we serve deserve to feel a sense of enjoyment and fulfillment in life, just like anyone else, and deserve to receive care from someone like you.

If you can come to work and put a smile on someone’s face, you already know how to do the biggest part of your job.

You’re always looking to learn and grow

At Pinnacle, you will learn a lot on the job. But if you’re a naturally curious person, you know that learning doesn’t stop as soon as your training ends. As we learn and discover better ways to care for people with disabilities, Pinnacle needs employees who can keep up with those changes and provide solutions to enhance the experiences of vulnerable adults.

If this sounds like you, apply today!

Pinnacle Services has several open positions we’re looking to fill, like our direct support professional role. But no matter the job you want to apply for, the values we hold remain the same across all positions.

Compassionate and empathetic communication is vital now more than ever. This is especially true for those who work with vulnerable populations. Adults with physical and intellectual disabilities are people too, but have often faced degrading mistreatment in the past.

Fortunately, direct support professionals care for those they serve a great deal and always strive to help people with disabilities live happy and fulfilling lives.

For direct support professionals, being patient, kind and empathetic are important skills to doing the job well; part of that revolves around the way they communicate.

The power of person-centered language

The way we speak to people with disabilities can substantially impact their well-being, no matter the intention. Many people with disabilities are able to communicate and key in to people’s behavior and want to feel heard and understood. By using person-centered language, we can treat them how they deserve to be treated: like human beings.

But what exactly is person-centered language? It’s the words we use to describe and interact with people around us, no matter who they are. It’s the words we use to help people feel empowered and capable to do what they love and live life to the fullest. Because at the end of the day, a person’s character is what defines them, not their physical or intellectual disability.

When communicating with individuals who have disabilities, person-centered language can make a world of difference for both you and them. Here are a few ways you can implement person-centered language when working with others:

Ask the person how they’d like to be referred to: Depending on who you’re caring for, some may understand what their condition is, others may not. No matter the circumstance, you should always ask how someone wants to be addressed. For instance, when speaking to or about vulnerable adults, you want to put the person ahead of their disability. Their disability may be visible or noticeable and impact multiple aspects of their lives; however, they are human beings above all else. Moreover, there may be other instances where an individual wants to use their disability as an adjective. For example, some people with autism may prefer to be called autistic. That’s because some may consider their autism as an integral part of their identity that can’t be separated from them.

Avoid using a patronizing tone: Many vulnerable adults have to endure people talking down to them, which can be very demeaning. When people reinforce stereotypes that someone with a disability or limitation is inferior to others, it can create barriers and diminish their quality of life. Thus, it’s crucial to think about how you say things or what you do, even if you have good intentions. You can avoid patronizing someone by asking them if they want help before giving it or not making assumptions about a person’s capabilities.

Actively listen to what they have to say: This may be common courtesy, but it’s especially imperative when you’re speaking to someone with a disability. In some cases, a person with a disability may have difficulty communicating their needs, so it’s important to listen attentively and wait for the individual to finish speaking. If you don’t understand what’s been said, ask for clarification in a way that is calm and polite.

The way we speak matters

Many people become direct support professionals because they want to lend a helping hand to others. And one of the best ways to extend that help is by effectively communicating with them. No matter who we are, how we look, or what our story is, we all deserve to be treated like human beings, regardless of our limitations.

Group meetings, especially online ones, can be difficult to navigate. But as the pandemic continues, it’s safest to run meetings this way to remain socially distant. This can be especially challenging for those in the care services sector, as meetings with your team, your individuals served and their families are often necessary.

Fortunately, we have the tools and technology to conduct virtual group meetings, we just need to ensure we’re using them correctly. Like many apps and software, virtual meeting platforms aren’t always perfect, whether it’s through technological or human error.

They can come with some downsides

While virtual meetings provide many benefits, they can also come with downsides, such as:

More distractions: People often join virtual meetings from the comfort of home. While there’s no place like home, it’s also a place full of constant distractions. Those distractions can take many forms. Whether it’s your cat jumping across the computer screen or people working on your house, these interruptions can create extra noise and commotion, making it hard for you and others to pay attention.

Technical glitches: Some people don’t have the best internet connection. Other times, the meeting platform doesn’t work how it’s supposed to. Either way, this can cause unpredictable communication disruptions during the meeting. These glitches can cause meetings to run longer than expected or make people miss important information.

More difficult to create a team dynamic: While virtual meetings can still be productive, there is something about in-person meetings that sparks innovation and creative problem solving. Because people are in their own separate spaces, online meetings can make it more difficult to develop trust and team cohesion, especially when new people are added to the team.

Hard to host larger gatherings: Virtual meetings often work best for smaller groups. But if those groups get too big, it can cause technical glitches and be much harder for people to speak up.

How you can improve them

Despite the cons of holding virtual meetings, there are plenty of solutions you and your care team can utilize to make it productive, engaging and worthwhile. Some of those include:

Share meeting notes: Some external distractions and technical glitches are out of our control. To prevent anything from getting lost in translation, recording the meeting and sharing documents can be extremely beneficial. That way, anyone involved in it can go back and get the information they missed. This can be especially crucial if you’re speaking with a person in need’s family, who may have specific requests for their loved one.

Create a clear agenda and time frame: If you’re the one hosting a meeting, it can be easy to get lost in the details, especially if participants have wide-ranging questions on a variety of issues. To make the meetings clear and concise, it’s important to set a theme for the meeting and keep your focus on that theme.

Limit the number of attendees: On platforms like Zoom, you can have up to 100 participants. However, talking to that many people on a chat is much more challenging than talking to 100 people in a town hall. If you want to make your meetings more manageable, limit the number of participants in the meeting. Or, you can break up the meeting into two different sessions.

Allow chances at the end for people to ask questions/voice concerns: To ensure information gets communicated effectively, hosting a Q&A session can help clarify anything for those involved. You may want to have people use the hand-raising feature on Zoom, Slack or Microsoft Teams. This feature can let people address questions or concerns they have. It will be different in each app, but any of them can be just as effective. If multiple people virtually raise their hands, the app can allow meeting hosts to take questions on a first-come, first-served basis.

Effective virtual meetings are possible

Online meetings, especially for those in the care services sector, are critical but challenging to execute. But with the right tools and techniques in place, having a clear, focused and satisfying meeting is possible.

At Pinnacle Services, we’re doing everything we can to foster safe and productive virtual meetings.

America is known as the world’s melting pot. People from Estonia to Ethiopia come here to provide a better quality of life for their families. But just like those who were born here, many immigrant families have a loved one with a disability. More and more, places like Pinnacle Services are seeing people from all backgrounds looking for care options for their loved ones with a disability.

Because of this, having a diverse and culturally competent team is a must. Workplace diversity is essential in any care facility, so it’s crucial for them to have staff that reflects the populations they serve.

We all come from different walks of life

Immigrant families don’t always have the resources to provide extra care or support. Many work multiple low-wage jobs and may not have the time to provide extra care. According to the Brookings Institution, the poverty rate among immigrants is around 14.1%, which is more than 4% of native-born Americans.

Due to these circumstances, many families may look for support from a place like Pinnacle Services. Even though DSPs are more diverse than other occupations, it’s still important to provide those who need care with compassion, understanding and representation.

Benefits of having diverse support professionals

DSPs must be able to relate to those they serve. We all come from different walks of life, so having DSPs that can empathize with and address the struggles faced by minority groups can help them feel connected. Here are a few other ways diverse DSPs can provide value:

They can bring cultural competency: Every culture has unique behavioral norms. If a person in need of care acts out in a way others find unusual, a DSP who comes from a similar culture may better understand why and be more equipped to address the situation.

They can have multiple ways of communicating: Some immigrants with disabilities and their families may struggle with communicating in English. However, a diverse DSP can work with these individuals by speaking their native language. Diverse DSPs can also display more patience when they attempt to speak English.

They can provide representation: No matter who it is, people like to know there are others who look like and understand them. Having that representation is crucial because it gives the person under DSP care a sense of belonging and helps them and their families feel heard.

They can set an example for other organizations: When care facilities encourage and promote diversity, it can send a strong message to others in their industry. When other care facilities see the value diverse employees can provide, it can encourage them to do the same, promoting a more just and equitable society.

Pinnacle Services is here to help

Searching for a new job can be challenging. Searching for a new job amid a global pandemic can make things more complicated. However, that doesn’t mean it’s impossible.

While unemployment went down in October, there are still countless Americans looking for jobs. Fortunately, places are still hiring, and people are still finding new work, even if it isn’t in their traditional field. For instance, there’s a demand increase for direct support professionals, and employers in the industry are having a hard time filling these roles.

If you’re interested in becoming a direct support professional, even if it’s only temporary, there are some things you should know before firing off your resume.

Landing a job as a direct support professional

This industry has its differences when it comes to finding and hiring talent. But one thing remains important in all sectors: having a resume that fits the role. If you’ve been having trouble finding a job, curtailing your resume to fit the position is the first and one of the most important steps to getting your foot in the door.

The interview selection process isn’t always ideal. Many employers use applicant tracking systems. These systems highlight keywords on a person’s resume to see if they fit the employer’s job description. Unfortunately, a lot of promising talent can get thrown out because their resumes lack the right key words. While this can be annoying for some, you can curtail your resume and experiences to match the job qualifications to get recognized by the system. Here are a few ways you can do so:

Apply your previous experience to the current position: For a direct support professional role, patience and compassion are essential traits for the job. Fortunately, you may already have used those soft skills from previous roles, especially if you’ve worked in sales, hospitality or customer service.

Place keywords from the job description into your resume: When applying for a direct support professional position, you’ll likely find things like housekeeping, bathing or senior care in the job description. If you have any experience related to these areas, make sure those key words are in your resume. You’ll also want to make sure you can use those keywords to highlight experiences related to the job.

Highlight achievements you had with those experiences: Employers don’t only want to see how your skills apply to their job. They want to know how you used those skills successfully. Success means different things for different employers. But unlike other jobs, success in this role isn’t a numbers game. When you’re applying to be a direct support professional, you want to make sure you highlight how you made the recipient happy or satisfied.

We have opportunities for you

Even in a rough economy like this, people are still finding work to get by. If you’re searching for a job and are interested in becoming a direct support professional, Pinnacle Services is looking for a hard worker with a big heart to provide quality care.

Finding a job isn’t always easy. Even when we aren’t in the middle of a global pandemic, marketing your skills to fit an employer’s needs can take a lot of time and effort. If you’re currently out of work due to the effects of COVID-19, the increased competition for jobs, limited opportunities and nontraditional interview processes can make the search feel more daunting.

However, plenty of organizations are still hiring, despite the rough economy. That is especially true for disability service providers, which still have substantial job vacancies. According to a recent report, demand for direct support and similar care professionals are rising. Projections say employers will need to fill more than 4 million caregiver positions within the next decade.

These shortages could provide opportunities for those open to work and provide stability in a period of uncertainty.

Selling yourself in a socially distanced world

If you’re looking to apply for a direct support professional position, the interview fundamentals are still the same. However, those conversations will likely take place at home on your computer. For now, you may want to anticipate using platforms like Zoom or Microsoft Teams during the process. Make sure you are in a well-lit, clean and quiet space with a reliable Wi-Fi connection. Dressing for success is equally crucial. Even if you’re interviewing from the comfort of your own home, going the extra mile with your outfit never hurts.

Tips for a successful interview

While the demand for direct support professionals is high, you still need to make sure you’re prepared and put your best foot forward. Here are a few things you can do to boost your chances of landing the job:

Tell the interviewer why you would make a great fit: Caring for the elderly or those with disabilities can be rewarding; it can also be hard work. Because of this, it’s a good idea to show the interviewer that you have the patience, compassion and understanding to do the job well. You can also highlight how your values align well with the company. Doing so shows the interviewer that you’ve done your research and that you share the same passion and commitment to helping those in need.

Give concrete answers to behavioral-based questions: In many interviews, especially in the health care sector, employers like to know how you handle yourself in various situations. When working with the elderly and those with disabilities, multiple challenges can arise, including potentially volatile or aggressive situations. While these occurrences are rare, employers want to make sure you are up to the task. Highlight situations where you faced a difficult challenge. Even if the experience does not directly correlate with the job you’re applying for, this gives the interviewer a better understanding of how you handle yourself when faced with a problem.

Highlight any relevant experience: You may have felt disenfranchised at times when applying for jobs due to “lack of experience.” However, there is no need to feel discouraged. Employers, especially in the health care sector, can have a long wish list of things they want in an employee, but that doesn’t mean you have to hit every mark. To bridge the experience gap, you can highlight relevant care experience from your personal life. For instance, if you have a sibling with a disability or an elderly grandparent, you can talk about what it was like to care for them and the steps you took to ensure they were happy and healthy.

Come with a list of questions: Contrary to popular belief, interviewing is a two-way street. While an employer may be interviewing you for one of their positions, you’re interviewing them as well when you ask questions. Asking questions can also help you express interest in the role and show them you want to fully understand your duties, expectations and the company culture.

There are still opportunities out there

Tough times don’t last forever, but tough people do. While job hunting in a competitive market can be discouraging, there are plenty of opportunities available. Organizations like Pinnacle Services are looking to hire caretakers to help individuals needing services lead healthy and satisfying lives. If you have patience, compassion and a good work ethic, we encourage you to apply.
